A three-pronged investigation has been launched against Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Superintending Engineer (Civil) Md Shariful Islam over allegations that he secured his job using a fake freedom fighter certificate.
The matter is being investigated by intelligence agencies, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the prosecutor's office, according to sources.
Shariful Islam joined CAAB on January 24, 2001, under the freedom fighter quota. He allegedly used the freedom fighter certificate of his father, Md Mosharraf Hossain, to obtain the job.
Questions have since been raised about the authenticity of the certificate. Written complaints submitted to different government offices claim that Mosharraf Hossain was not a genuine freedom fighter.
Officials involved in the investigation said verification of the certificate is now at the final stage. Initial findings reportedly found several inconsistencies. Investigators also said Mosharraf Hossain's name was not found in the gazette list of 640 freedom fighters from Gopalganj district.
According to the complaint, the certificate was issued on October 26, 1999, and carries the signatures of then prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Central Command Council chairman Ahad Chowdhury. Investigators are examining the authenticity of the document.
