The government has unveiled plans to introduce franchise-based post offices across Bangladesh as part of a broader strategy to modernise and expand postal services nationwide.

Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam announced the initiative in Parliament on Tuesday while responding to a question from Rangpur-3 lawmaker Md Mahbubur Rahman Belal.

He said the authorities are currently identifying suitable locations to set up the privately operated franchise outlets, which will function as postal pickup and service points.

The move is designed to increase accessibility and efficiency by partnering with private entrepreneurs, particularly in areas where traditional postal infrastructure is limited.

Highlighting ongoing reforms within the postal department, the minister said home delivery services are already available for essential documents such as land records, passports and driving licences.

In addition, 14 fulfillment centres have been established nationwide to strengthen logistics support for the growing e-commerce sector. These centres handle product collection, warehousing, sorting, transportation and distribution.

The government is also working to expand real-time parcel tracking through the Domestic Mail Monitoring System and to ensure affordable domestic parcel services. International shipments continue to be facilitated through the Express Mail Service.

Anam expressed confidence that the combined measures will enhance service delivery, improve operational efficiency and position the national postal system as a competitive player in both domestic and cross-border logistics.
