Rainwater inundates New Market, shops remain closed

Persistent rain inundated Dhaka’s New Market on Sunday, forcing traders to keep their shops closed as knee-deep water flooded the market premises.

Water accumulated across the market’s corridors and walkways, leaving many shops, particularly roadside stalls, under water. Clothing, footwear and other merchandise were damaged, while traders rushed to move goods to higher ground to minimise losses.

Business owners said rising water levels since the morning prevented them from opening their shops, and the waterlogging kept customers away.

The surrounding roads also remained waterlogged, reducing traffic and forcing pedestrians to wade through knee-deep water.

Traders urged the authorities to take immediate steps to drain the water, warning that continued rainfall would worsen losses and prolong disruption to business.
