The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially going to be kicked off Thursday, June 11, 2026, as co-hosts Mexico will face South Africa at the historic Estadio Azteca. The opening match launched the largest tournament in football history, expanding to 48 teams playing 104 matches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While global excitement peaks, the tournament’s opening hours have been heavily marked by a major U.S. border controversy and massive celebratory tributes in New York City.

The Countdown Ends: Tournament Underway
The historic 39-day competition will begin with a star-studded opening ceremony in Mexico City featuring headliners Shakira and Burna Boy. Following today’s Group A matchups, the tournament shifts northward Friday, June 12, 2026, for the opening games of the other co-hosts.
Canada will make its home World Cup debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the newly expanded BMO Field in Toronto.

The United States will play its opener against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Grand Finale will eventually bring the tournament to a close on July 19, 2026, at the MetLife Stadium / New York New Jersey Stadium.
Detailed schedules and updates are available through the official FIFA World Cup Match Center.

UEFA Defies US Border Decision, Hands Somali Referee Flagship Super Cup
In the most controversial storyline leading up to the tournament, top African official Omar Artan was denied entry into the United States by Customs and Border Protection after landing at Miami International Airport. Artan, who was named the 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year, was set to become the first Somali in history to officiate a World Cup game.

US officials cited vague “vetting concerns” regarding alleged ties to terror organizations, a claim made without public proof that sparked fierce backlash from football groups. FIFA stated it was completely powerless to intervene in domestic immigration decisions.

In a direct response, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin announced today that Artan has been appointed to referee the prestigious UEFA Super Cup on August 12, 2026, in Salzburg, Austria. The showpiece match will feature Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain taking on Europa League holders Aston Villa. The official announcement and statements can be read on the UEFA Press Center. Meanwhile, Artan returned to a hero’s welcome from thousands of fans in Mogadishu on Wednesday.

“Thierry Henry Way” Unveiled as World Cup Fever Hits New York City
As tournament celebrations sweep across the United States, New York City has officially turned to symbolism to honor historical football greats.

The New York City Council unveiled a temporary street co-naming at West 50th Street and Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, officially designating the intersection as “Thierry Henry Way”. Henry, a 1998 World Cup winner with France, joined the unveiling ceremony via video conference. The tribute honors his legendary international legacy and his five seasons playing for the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer. More details on the city council’s decree can be tracked via ESPN Football News.

To spread the tournament spirit across the outer boroughs, city officials also co-named the intersection of Shea Road and Meridian Road in Queens as “Pelé Way” to honor the late three-time Brazilian World Cup icon. Both commemorative street signs are positioned near major World Cup fan viewing zones and will remain active for fans to visit until November 1, 2026.
