Football never stops: A roadmap to the 2030 World Cup

After the historic 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded with Spain lifting the trophy, football’s biggest battles are set to continue across continents. From the UEFA Nations League and Asian Cup to Euro 2028 and the centenary FIFA World Cup in 2030, the world’s top national teams are preparing for a packed calendar of major international tournaments.

Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19, 2026, to claim their second World Cup title. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, marked the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup.

The final also made history as the first World Cup decider to feature an 11-minute Super Bowl-style halftime show, with global stars including Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber and BTS taking part in the entertainment programme.

However, the final was not free from controversy. Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was shown a red card shortly before Spain’s decisive goal. Several refereeing decisions, including Spain’s disallowed goals, sparked debate among fans and analysts. Questions were also raised over Argentina’s playing style and disciplinary record, with reports even emerging of online campaigns demanding action against the team.

Following the World Cup, national teams will return to action in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League. The competition will begin in September 2026, with the group stage continuing until the end of the year. The quarter-finals are scheduled for March 2027, while the semi-finals and final will take place in June. World champions Spain are expected to enter the tournament as one of the favourites.

The first major continental tournament after the World Cup will be the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which will be hosted by Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5. A total of 24 teams will compete for Asian football’s biggest prize, with defending champions Qatar aiming to retain their title.

Africa’s premier international competition, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), will also return in 2027. Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda will jointly host the tournament from June 19 to July 17, with reigning champions Morocco looking to defend their crown.

Football fans will have two major continental tournaments to look forward to in 2028. UEFA Euro 2028 will be hosted jointly by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland from June 9 to July 9. Matches will be played across eight cities and nine stadiums, with the final scheduled at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium. Spain, the current European champions, will once again be among the favourites.

The 2028 Copa America is also expected to take place in June-July, although the host nation has not yet been officially confirmed. The United States is considered a leading candidate to stage the tournament. Argentina, the reigning champions, will aim to retain their South American crown.

Attention will then turn to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will mark the centenary of football’s biggest tournament. Spain, Portugal and Morocco will jointly host the historic edition, while special anniversary matches will be played in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay to honour the birthplace of the World Cup.

Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing over a possible 2026 Finalissima between UEFA and CONMEBOL. The match could be held at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium in November, featuring World Cup winners Spain against Copa America champions Argentina.

With a series of major tournaments ahead, the global football calendar promises no shortage of drama. New champions, emerging stars and unforgettable moments are set to keep fans around the world engaged long after the 2026 World Cup finale.
