Misinformation surge sparks govt action

The rapid spread of misinformation, manipulated content and online smear campaigns has become a growing challenge for Bangladesh, prompting the government to strengthen efforts to counter organised disinformation while maintaining constitutional protections for free expression.

The issue has gained renewed prominence following the circulation of fake photo cards and AI-generated videos targeting senior government ministers and top BNP leaders on social media platforms. Officials and political leaders warn that the increasing misuse of digital tools is not only damaging individual reputations but also creating confusion among the public and undermining trust in institutions.

At a press conference organised by the Prime Minister’s Office, Adviser and Spokesperson Dr Mahdi Amin described the trend as a serious concern. Several ministers and senior political figures have similarly voiced alarm over the misuse of social media to spread false narratives and personal attacks.

Government officials said certain groups are deliberately disseminating misleading information to create political instability, distort public understanding and weaken confidence in state institutions. According to sources, false claims have been circulated on issues ranging from post-election developments to government decisions and broader governance matters.

In response, authorities have reportedly begun strengthening monitoring mechanisms and legal measures to identify and prevent organised disinformation activities. A special monitoring cell has already started tracking false information on social media, while preparations are underway to address fake accounts, coordinated propaganda networks and misinformation campaigns. Fact-checking initiatives are also expected to be expanded.

Policymakers have stressed that democratic criticism and freedom of expression must be clearly distinguished from personal attacks, character assassination and hate-driven propaganda. They maintain that efforts to combat misinformation should not be used to suppress lawful dissent.

Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan told The Daily Observer that misinformation and disinformation have become a global challenge in the age of widespread smartphone and social media use.

He said the government is working to establish a Media Commission involving stakeholders from the media sector, where the issue will receive special attention.

BNP leaders also voiced concern over the growing trend. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi urged people to remain vigilant against falsehoods and slander, while BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir criticised personal attacks and deliberate propaganda aimed at damaging the political environment.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed warned that rumours and provocative campaigns on platforms such as Facebook are being used to create instability. While reaffirming freedom of expression as a fundamental right, he said spreading false information and harming the reputation of individuals or institutions cannot be tolerated.

Analysts believe an effective response will require stronger fact-checking, responsible use of technology and greater public awareness to curb the growing influence of misinformation in the digital space. The government has reiterated that those who intentionally spread false information to harm individuals, institutions or the state may face action under existing laws, while constructive criticism and lawful expression will remain protected.
