NU launches ‘Dr Sukumar Roy Merit Scholarship’

GAZIPUR, June 18: The family of the late Dr Sukumar Roy, an associate professor in the Department of Bengali at the National University (NU), has decided to launch a scholarship in memory of him. 

To encourage students of the department, his family has donated Tk 10 lakh to the ‘Dr Sukumar Roy Merit Scholarship’ Fund. From the dividend of this money, two students who will achieve the best results in the Masters in the Department of Bengali will be awarded this scholarship every year. The students who will achieve the best results in the on-campus Masters of the NU and the best results among the colleges affiliated to the NU will also receive the scholarship.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the donors of the ‘Dr Sukumar Roy Merit Scholarship’ Fund and the NU on the campus on Thursday. NU Vice-Chancellor (VC) and Convener of the ‘Dr Sukumar Roy Merit Scholarship’ Fund, Professor Dr ASM Amanullah, and Rita Brahma, wife of the late Dr Sukumar Roy, signed the MoU.

At that time, NU VC Professor Dr ASM Amanullah said, “This initiative is very commendable. It will encourage students to achieve good results in addition to obtaining higher education.” 

Members of the ‘Dr Sukumar Roy Merit Scholarship’ Fund, NU Treasurer Professor Dr ATM Zafrul Azam, Registrar Molla Mahfuz Al-Hossain, Member Secretary of the Fund and Chairman of the Faculty of Humanities and Law Dr Syed Hadiuzzaman, Teacher of the Bengali Department Emon Salauddin and late Dr Sukumar Roy’s son Sudip Brahma Roy were present at that time.

It is worth noting that renowned researcher and teacher Dr Sukumar Roy died of COVID-19 on July 7, 2021.
