Md Aminul Islam, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor, on Saturday said that the media in Bangladesh played a crucial role in the 2024 July Mass Uprising.

“The media played a crucial role in the 2024 July Mass Uprising. The nation could not have become united if the media had not at that time disseminated accurate information, the true picture of events, and the programmes of the protesters,” he said.
The ICT Chief Prosecutor came with the remarks while addressing the annual general meeting of Supreme Court Reporters Forum (SRF) in the capital’s Dhaka Club in the afternoon.

“After a long time, a democratic system of governance has been established in Bangladesh, and through this, the media in the country has now gained the opportunity to work independently,” Aminul added.

Regarding cases at the International Crimes Tribunal, the Chief Prosecutor said that given the rate at which cases are being received and the manner in which prosecution investigation reports are being submitted, he believes there may be a need to expand the Tribunal and the prosecution team. He also said that the number of officials in the investigation agency may need to be increased.

The chief prosecutor further stated that they are trying to conduct the tribunal’s judicial proceedings with the highest level of honesty and impartiality, reports BSS.
