A Dhaka court on Sunday rejected the bail petition of former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque in a murder case filed over the July 2024 anti-discrimination student movement.
The order was passed by Md. Sadekin Habib Bappi, acting judge of the 7th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court in Dhaka, following a hearing on the bail application.
Khairul Haque was shown arrested in the case on May 23 after the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Ibrahim Khalil, submitted an application on May 16 seeking permission to arrest him in connection with the case. The former chief justice has been in jail since his arrest from his residence in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area on May 16, 2026.
Earlier, on May 17, a High Court bench comprising Justice Rajik-Al-Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury issued a rule and directed the authorities not to show Khairul Haque arrested in any case without specific allegations or subject him to unnecessary harassment.
