18 pro-Jamaat DAGs, AAGs quit over judiciary reform issues

Seven Deputy Attorney Generals (DAGs) and 11 Assistant Attorney Generals (AAGs), affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, have resigned from their respective positions, protesting the non-implementation of the July Charter, the state’s opposition to a separate judiciary secretariat, and the repeal of the Supreme Court Judge Appointment Ordinance.

Later, at a press conference, Deputy Attorney General Yusuf Ali, one of the officials who stepped down, said, “We resigned in protest 
against the government's failure to implement the July Charter, the cancellation of the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, and the Supreme Court Judge Appointment Ordinance."

The lawyers submitted their resignation letters collectively to the Attorney General's Office on Tuesday, he said.

The Deputy Attorney Generals who resigned are Yusuf Ali, Shafikur Rahman, Abdul Karim, Farid Uddin Khan, Golam Rahman Bhuiyan, Asad Uddin and Tarikul Islam. The Assistant Attorney Generals who resigned are Imrul Kayes Rana, Humayun Kabir Tanim, Abdul Kaiyum Bhuiyan, Abdullahil Maruf Fahim, Jowadur Rahman, Shamsil Arefin, Mahabuba Akter Roli, Nur Nabi Ujjal, Al Reza Amir, Rezaul Islam and Zakir Hossain.

According to Supreme Court sources, all those who resigned are active members and hold various positions in the Supreme Court branch of the Bangladesh Lawyers' Council, an organisation of lawyers associated with Jamaat-e-Islami.
