Holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at the historic Karbala Maidan, is being observed across the country today (Friday), as in other Muslim-majority nations, with due religious solemnity, mourning and reverence.
Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic year 1448 AH, holds profound religious, historical and spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. On this day in 61 AH, Imam Hussain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with members of his family and loyal companions, embraced the martyrdom on the plains of Karbala while resisting injustice and oppression.
The sacrifice of Imam Hussain continues to inspire Muslims to uphold the values of truth, justice and human dignity.
On the occasion, President Md Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages, urging the people of Bangladesh to reflect the ideals of Ashura in building a peaceful, humane and prosperous nation.
To mark the day, the government has declared a public holiday on Friday. Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private television channels are airing special programmes highlighting the significance of the occasion.
Religious discussions, Milad Mahfils, Qurankhani and special prayers are being held across the country.
Also, extensive security measures have been taken to ensure the peaceful observance of Tazia processions and other mourning programmes, particularly in the capital.
