The authorities of Islamic University (IU) formed a four-member committee on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, to conduct further investigations into the murder of Assistant Professor, also the chairman of Social Welfare Department, Asma Sadia Runa on March 4, 2026.
The acting registrar of the university Professor Dr Manjurul Haque signed a notice in this regard that said the decision follows the resolution no. 32 from the 274th Syndicate meeting held on June 29.
The newly formed committee, headed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Yeaqub Ali as convener, has been directed to submit its findings to the Vice-Chancellor. Other members are- IU syndicate member and additional IGP (prl) Dr Ashrafur Rahman, supreme court Advocate Dr Muhammad Sajjad Hossain, and deputy registrar Mashudul Haque Talukder as member-secretary.
Assistant Professor Asma Runa was slaughtered inside her office room on March 4 by university staff member Fazlur Rahman, who subsequently attempted suicide.
Following the incident, the victim’s husband filed a murder case naming four individuals, including the primary accused Fazlu, two assistant professors of the department Shyam Sundar Sarkar and Habibur Rahman, and a deputy registrar Bishwajit Kumar Biswas.
An initial five-member probe body had been formed earlier on March 7, 2026.
