The University of Dhaka (DU) is set to celebrate its 105th founding anniversary on Wednesday with a series of programmes under the theme, "Restoring Democracy and Dhaka University in Higher Education."
The university authorities have completed all preparations for the celebration, which will include a procession, cultural performances, a discussion meeting and other commemorative events.
A preparatory meeting was held on Tuesday with Vice-Chancellor Prof Obaidul Islam in the chair.
Marking the occasion, the vice-chancellor extended his greetings to the university's present and former teachers, students, researchers, guardians, officers and employees.
He also called for collective efforts to strengthen the university's academic excellence and modernise its education and research activities.
Established on July 1, 1921, Dhaka University is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education.
The day's programme will begin at 9:30 AM when teachers, students, officers and employees from all residential halls and hostels gather at Smriti Chirantan.
A colourful procession, led by the vice-chancellor, will start at 9:45 AM and parade through the campus with the participation of teachers, students, alumni, officers and staff.
The formal inauguration will be held at 10:00 AM in front of the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), where the national flag, the university flag and the flags of residential halls will be hoisted, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony.
Students and teachers of the Department of Music will perform the national anthem, the university theme song and songs by Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam. International students will also stage a cultural performance.
A concert will later be held in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture.
A discussion titled "Restoring Democracy and Dhaka University in Higher Education" will begin at 10:30 AM at the TSC auditorium. Emeritus Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury of the Department of English will present the keynote paper.
To facilitate the celebrations, all classes will remain suspended from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, although scheduled examinations will be held as planned.
The university has also announced traffic restrictions to ensure security during the celebrations.
From 2:30 PM to 10:00 PM, entry of vehicles to the campus will remain restricted. However, vehicles carrying DU stickers and essential service vehicles, including ambulances, doctors, patients, journalists, ride-sharing services, food delivery, online shopping deliveries and other government vehicles, will be allowed to enter through the Shahbagh, Doel Chattar, Shibbari Crossing, Fuller Road and Nilkhet entry points.
