A 55-year-old woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her husband in Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha district on Monday, over a decade after the same man killed his mother-in-law in a case in which the victim herself helped secure his release on bail.

The deceased was identified as Dulali Begum, wife of Biraj Mia of Sadar Colony village under Katabari union, reports UNB.

According to police and locals, an altercation broke out between the couple over a family dispute around 5:00 PM.

At one stage, Biraj allegedly stabbed his wife in the chest with a sharp knife, leaving her dead on the spot.

After the incident, the suspect reportedly tried to flee and hid in a nearby jute field. However, locals chased him, caught him and handed him over to police.

Locals claimed that Biraj killed his mother-in-law Selina Begum in a similar manner around 10-12 years ago.

Dulali stood by her husband and secured his release on bail in the case, they said, adding that more than a decade later, she met the same fate as her mother.

Officer-in-Charge of Gobindaganj Police Station Swapan Kumar Sarkar said they recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.

He also said they arrested the accused with the help of local residents.
