A team from the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) has won the MATE ROV 2026 World Championship in Canada, securing the top position in the Pioneer Class of the global underwater robotics competition marking a major international achievement in underwater robotics.

The competition was held from June 23 to 27 in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, where MIST’s flagship underwater robot MAVIRIO ROV outperformed 77 teams from 18 countries, securing the highest overall score across all competition categories.

According to a MIST media release issued on Wednesday, the victory highlights the team’s strong capabilities in designing, planning and developing advanced underwater robotic systems for real-world engineering applications.

The MAVIRIO ROV is a remotely operated underwater vehicle developed for complex missions beneath the water surface, including ocean exploration, marine environmental monitoring, underwater infrastructure inspection and repair operations.

Organised by the Marine Technology Society (MTS), the MATE ROV Competition is one of the world’s leading underwater robotics contests, bringing together university teams globally to solve practical marine engineering challenges through innovation and technology.

The MIST Mavirov team comprises students from the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering. Under the guidance of Captain Mohammad Moinul Hasan, the team includes 11 core members and 24 general members.

The team received support from Meghna Group of Industries (MGI) and Pubali Bank PLC as gold sponsors, which helped facilitate their participation in the international competition. The Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard also extended significant support to the team.

Officials said the achievement reflects Bangladesh’s growing strength in robotics, engineering innovation and participation in global technology competitions.
