The final three matches of the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 delivered drama, history and resilience as Argentina, Egypt and Colombia booked the last remaining places in the Round of 16.

Argentina survived a thrilling extra-time battle, Egypt celebrated a historic breakthrough in a nerve-racking penalty shootout, while Colombia relied on defensive discipline to edge past Ghana.

Defending champions Argentina were pushed to their limits before overcoming a spirited Cape Verde side 3-2 after extra time.

The South American giants appeared to be in control for long periods, but Cape Verde refused to back down, matching Argentina with determination and attacking intent. The underdogs twice fought back to level the score, forcing the match into extra time and raising hopes of one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

With penalties looming, Argentina finally found the decisive breakthrough in the 111th minute when sustained pressure forced an unfortunate own goal that sealed their place in the Round of 16. Although victory kept their title defence alive, the performance also served as a reminder that every knockout match presents a different challenge.

Egypt created one of the tournament's most memorable moments by defeating Australia on penalties after a fiercely contested 1-1 draw.

Neither side managed to find a winner during 120 minutes of football, setting up a tense penalty shootout. Showing remarkable composure under immense pressure, the Egyptians converted their spot-kicks with confidence while their goalkeeper produced crucial saves to secure a 4-2 victory.

The result marked Egypt's first-ever World Cup knockout-stage win, triggering emotional celebrations among players and supporters alike. It was a landmark achievement for a team that combined discipline, resilience and belief to write a new chapter in the nation's football history.

Colombia secured their place in the Round of 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana in a match where defensive organisation proved just as important as attacking quality.

An early goal from Jhon Arias gave Colombia the perfect start, but the remainder of the contest became a battle of concentration and tactical discipline. Ghana pressed for an equaliser throughout the second half, creating several dangerous moments, yet Colombia's well-organised defence stood firm.

The narrow victory ensured Colombia progressed with confidence, while Ghana bowed out after a determined campaign that demonstrated the growing strength of African football on the global stage.

With the Round of 32 now complete, the World Cup enters its decisive phase with the Round of 16 fully confirmed. Argentina remain on course to defend their crown, Egypt have earned a place in history with a landmark victory, and Colombia continue to build momentum. As the stakes grow higher, every remaining match promises to bring new heroes, unforgettable moments and dreams that are now just a few victories away from football's greatest prize.
