Former Bangladesh Army chief General (retd) SM Shafiuddin Ahmed did not appear before the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday in connection with an inquiry into allegations of irregularities, corruption and acquisition of illegal assets.

Instead, he sought 30 days to appear before the anti-graft agency.

Shafiuddin was scheduled to appear at the ACC headquarters in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha at 12:30PM to give his statement.

ACC Deputy Director of Public Relations Aktarul Islam confirmed this on Monday.

He said Shafiuddin had been asked to appear in person and provide his statement on the allegations. However, he requested 30 days’ time. The ACC will now take the next steps in accordance with the law, the official said.

Earlier, an ACC notice signed by Director Md Abul Hasnat summoned the former army chief to the commission’s headquarters at 12:30PM. He was also asked to bring a photocopy of his national identity card.

The notice said recording Shafiuddin’s statement regarding the allegations was “essential” in the interest of a fair inquiry.

According to ACC sources, the inquiry into the allegations against Shafiuddin began on December 14, 2025. A team led by ACC Director Md Abul Hasnat is conducting the inquiry.

ACC officials said the allegations are still at the inquiry stage. After completing the investigation, the team will submit a report to the commission. If evidence supporting the allegations is found, the commission may decide to file a case. If the allegations are not substantiated, the inquiry may be closed.

Shafiuddin assumed office as Chief of Army Staff on June 24, 2021, succeeding General Aziz Ahmed. He served as army chief for three years during the Awami League government and retired on June 23, 2024.
