A health worker at the Arayhazar Upazila Health Complex in Narayanganj was allegedly assaulted on Sunday morning, prompting doctors to suspend outpatient services for several hours. The victim, Abdullah Al Kamal, an assistant community medical officer, was later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after his condition deteriorated. The incident reportedly involved the brother of a local BNP leader and took place around 8:30 am in the hospital emergency unit.
According to hospital sources, the altercation began when a patient’s husband, Billal Hossain, brought prescribed medication to the emergency department while the attending medical officer was engaged with another critical patient. As the health worker was occupied, tensions escalated into an argument, which allegedly turned violent. Billal Hossain and several associates are accused of punching, kicking, and physically assaulting the medical officer, leaving him seriously injured. He was first referred to the National Institute of Neurosciences, but was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to unavailability of beds.
In protest, doctors at the Arayhazar Upazila Health Complex halted outpatient services while keeping emergency care operational, causing disruption for patients. Later, the Arayhazar Upazila Executive Office and Arayhazar Police Station officials visited the facility and assured a proper investigation and legal action against those responsible, after which the doctors withdrew their work abstention around 1 pm. Police stated that no written complaint had been filed yet, while confirming that necessary action would follow once received.
The accused, Billal Hossain, is the younger brother of Arayhazar Upazila BNP President Yusuf Ali Bhuiyan. However, Yusuf Ali Bhuiyan denied the allegations, claiming that the patient was initially brought in an unconscious state and that no doctor was present at the time of admission, which led to confusion and a minor scuffle. He further stated that there was no planned assault and that normal medical services have resumed at the facility.
