Commerce Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan on Sunday called for stronger coordination, sincere collaboration among stakeholders and enhanced leadership capabilities at the field level to make market monitoring activities more effective, integrated and results-driven.
He made the remarks while chairing a workshop on strengthening the skills of team leaders engaged in market surveillance, held at the Ministry of Commerce conference room in the capital.
Highlighting the importance of collective action, the Commerce Secretary said all institutions involved in market oversight are working towards a shared objective of protecting consumers and ensuring market stability.
"The greater challenge is not a lack of institutional capacity but ensuring effective coordination, mutual cooperation and swift decision-making at the operational level," he said.
He stressed that leadership and motivation must move beyond rhetoric and translate into practical actions on the ground.
"Motivation is not merely an idea; it must be reflected in concrete action plans and effective implementation. Exchanging experiences and adopting successful working methods can make market management more dynamic and responsive," he added.
Ataur Rahman Khan noted that market monitoring is jointly conducted by the Ministry of Commerce and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, while several other ministries, departments and government agencies also play critical roles.
"In reality, maintaining market discipline is a collective responsibility. Rapid field-level intervention, coordinated operations and accountable execution remain the fundamental strengths of this system," he said.
He underscored the need to empower team leaders with stronger managerial and decision-making skills so that they can respond more effectively to emerging market challenges and consumer concerns.
Additional Secretary (IIT) of the Ministry of Commerce Shibir Bichitra Barua and Acting Director General of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Sebastian Rema attended the workshop as special guests. Senior officials from the ministry and the consumer rights watchdog were also present.
The workshop focused on enhancing leadership competencies, improving inter-agency coordination and strengthening field operations to ensure more effective market supervision and consumer protection across the country.
