The death toll from rain-triggered landslides in Cox's Bazar has risen to 11, including Rohingya refugees, women and children, officials said on Tuesday.
Eight people were killed in separate landslides at Rohingya camps in Ukhiya, while one local resident died in Cox's Bazar town. Another woman was killed in a landslide in Darianagar on Tuesday afternoon, and a seven-year-old boy died in Pekua on Monday.
The worst incident occurred at Jamtoli Rohingya Camp-15, where a landslide buried a house, killing Kamal Hossain, 44, his wife Humaira Begum, 39, and their four-year-old son Anas. Seven other family members were rescued with injuries.
Another child was killed in Camp-7, while four members of two families died in a separate landslide at Camp-11.
Authorities said the victims' bodies were recovered and sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Ahidur Rahman urged people to avoid staying at the foot of hills and other landslide-prone areas until weather conditions improve.
Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said illegal hill cutting had created dangerous conditions in several parts of the camps and called for strict legal action against those responsible.
