Switzerland advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout. This is the first time the team has made it to the last eight of the World Cup since 1954.
The two teams remained goalless throughout the scheduled 90 minutes and extra time. The game then went to a tiebreaker. Colombia took the first shot.
Both teams scored from their own shots in the beginning. However, at one point, Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a great save from a Colombian shot. On the other hand, Manuel Akanji shot wide for Switzerland.
Switzerland eventually won the shootout 4-3. Ruben Vargas took the winning shot, sending Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas the wrong way.
Switzerland last reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1954. The team reached this milestone again after 72 years.
It is worth noting that both teams have had bitter experiences in penalty shootouts before. Switzerland lost 3-0 to Ukraine in the 2006 World Cup. That was their only previous World Cup shootout. On the other hand, Colombia lost to England in the 2018 World Cup.
With this win, Switzerland will now face Argentina in the quarterfinals. The match will be held in Kansas City on Saturday night
