A 50-year-old housewife was electrocuted and died after attempting to remove a live electric wire hanging dangerously over a road in Parshuram upazila of Feni on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as 'Nonai Bibi', wife of Kashem of Jorda Bari in North Mohammadpur village under Box Mahmud Union.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, Nonai Bibi noticed that an electric wire had snapped during a recent storm and was hanging dangerously across a village road frequently used by pedestrians. Concerned that children or other passersby might be injured, she tried to move the wire away from the road. However, the line was still live, and she was electrocuted the moment she touched it. Locals rushed to rescue her and took her to a hospital, but she died on the way.
The incident triggered grief and anger among residents of North Mohammadpur and surrounding areas. Locals alleged that the Rural Electrification Board failed to conduct routine inspections of power lines after storms, accusing the authorities of negligence that led to the fatal accident. They demanded a proper investigation and accountability for those responsible.
Responding to the allegations, 'Sohel Akter', Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Parshuram Palli Bidyut, confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the death. However, he denied negligence, saying the office had not received any prior complaint or information about the snapped wire. As a result, the electricity supply to the line could not be disconnected in time.
Officer-in-Charge 'Ashraful Islam' of Parshuram Model Police Station also confirmed the death by electrocution.
