5 held over old woman’s death in Narsingdi

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested five people on suspicion of involvement in death of a 70-year-old speech-impaired woman, allegedly assaulted and robbed at Methikanda Railway Station in Raipura Upazila of Narsingdi.
Deceased Bobi Begum, 70, died while undergoing treatment after being attacked and robbed of her savings.
Arrestees were identified as Md Ilias, 35, Md Sakib, 19, Belal Mia, 26, Md Din Islam, 26, and Md Rifat, 20.
First three of them were arrested from areas adjacent to Methikanda Railway Station in Narsingdi, while remaining two were detained in Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria.

RAB-11 Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Masud Parvez confirmed this information at a press briefing held in  its media centre the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Friday.

RAB-11 launched an investigation into the incident after Bobi Begum died following the assault and robbery, he said, adding, by using intelligence information and technological support, investigators identified the suspects and subsequently arrested them.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspects admitted their involvement, RAB said and adding that, they confessed that they had known beforehand that Bobi Begum kept cash with her. Late on the night of the incident, they allegedly attacked and beat her before fleeing with the money. After the victim later died while receiving treatment, the case was converted into a murder investigation.

According to local residents and police, the attack took place at around 2:00 am on Sunday while Bobi Begum was sleeping in an abandoned room at Methikanda Railway Station. A group of assailants allegedly entered the room, severely beat her, and made off with her life savings. She sustained serious injuries to her face, eyes, and other parts of her body.

On Tuesday at around 11:30pm her condition deteriorated and she was taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex. As her condition worsened further, she was referred to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, but died on the way at around 1:15am.
