UNB Executive Editor and Solis founder Nahar Khan attended the World Editors Forum (WEF) Asia Chapter meeting organised by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in Singapore.
Held recently at Conrad Orchard, the meeting brought together editors, media executives and journalism professionals from across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss newsroom challenges and the future of journalism.
The WEF Asia Chapter is a network of regional editors that advises WAN-IFRA on newsroom and journalism-related activities.
The meeting was chaired by Star Media Group Malaysia Chief Content Officer Esther Ng, with WEF Executive Director Cherilyn Ireton of the UK as co-chair.
Discussions focused on strengthening public trust in journalism, countering unverified information, improving newsroom planning and resource allocation, and addressing emerging challenges facing media organisations.
Adriaan Basson, Editor-in-Chief of South Africa's News24, shared his organisation's experience in building public trust and the challenges it faces.
Participants also exchanged views on responding responsibly when unverified stories go viral and discussed possible questions for the next State of the Asian Newsroom Report, particularly on planning, staffing and resource allocation.
Another key agenda was the formation of a core group for the WEF Asia Chapter to advise WAN-IFRA and coordinate regional activities. The group is expected to meet up to four times a year, mostly online.
The participants also discussed the meeting schedule for 2027.
Editors and media representatives from Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, South Africa and the UK attended the meeting. - UNB
