Police have arrested a garment worker over a Facebook post allegedly claiming responsibility for setting fire to a police vehicle during a workers’ protest in Dhaka’s Pallabi area.
Mohammad Khalid Mansur, officer-in-charge of Uttara West Police Station said that the man, identified as Rajib Chandra Das, was arrested from a house in Uttara’s Sector 9 on Sunday night.
“Rajib claimed in a Facebook post that he had set the police vehicle on fire,” Khalid said, adding that preliminary information suggested he worked at a garment factory.
The officer alleged that Rajib might have carried out the arson on behalf of the banned Awami League, but did not disclose any evidence to support the claim.
Rajib was subsequently handed over to Pallabi Police Station for further investigation.
The arrest came amid protests by garment workers from several factories in Mirpur, who blocked roads from Sunday morning demanding a minimum monthly salary of Tk 30,000.
