Published : Sunday, 12 July, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday said that Dhaka Medical College (DMC) as more than a medical institution and a living witness to Bangladesh's history.

He said the college had played a glorious role in every major chapter of the nation, from the Language Movement and the Liberation War to the anti-dictatorship movement of the 1990s and the student-public uprising of 2024.

Tarique Rahman made the remark as the chief guest at the programme marking the 81st founding anniversary of Dhaka Medical College on Saturday. The Prime Minister inaugurated the celebration by releasing pigeons and balloons symbols of peace, at the Shaheed Milon Chattar on the campus.

Tarique Rahman also planted a tree on the college auditorium premises in presence of his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman.

The Prime Minister said Dhaka Medical College has produced not only skilled doctors but also patriotic teachers, researchers, social leaders and freedom fighters. He said many members of the institution had sacrificed their own interests to save the lives of others.

He extended greetings to the college's former and current teachers, students, doctors, nurses, health workers and all others associated with the institution. He also paid tribute to those who are no longer alive, saying their contributions continue to inspire public service.

Calling Dhaka Medical College Hospital one of the country's most trusted healthcare institutions, the Prime Minister said countless stories of struggle, hope and recovery are written every day in its wards and corridors.

He said a doctor's responsibility extends beyond treatment, as every patient also carries the hopes and trust of an entire family.

Addressing doctors, he said professional skills must go hand in hand with compassion. He added that kind behaviour and proper advice often work as effectively as medicine and described doctors as true friends of people in times of crisis.

The Prime Minister announced that the government has decided to deploy 10 Ansar members at every Upazila Health Complex to strengthen hospital security.

He also said the recruitment process for 5,000 MBBS doctors has already begun, while vacant posts for doctors, nurses, medical technologists, pharmacists, midwives and other health professionals will be filled quickly.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Medical College (DMC) will transform into one of the premier centres for medical education, research, and innovation in South Asia over the next 20 to 25 years, cardiologist and former alumnus Zubaida Rahman has said.

Speaking at the 80th founding anniversary programme of DMC on Saturday, the wife of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said she envisioned the institution reaching new heights over the period.

“We want to see Dhaka Medical College become one of South Asia’s finest centres for medical education, research and innovation,” she said.
