FARIDPUR, July 11: Five people were killed on the spot after a passenger bus ran over pedestrians on Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Bhanga Upazila of Faridpur on Saturday evening, triggering violent protests in which enraged locals set fire to at least six vehicles and blocked the highway.
The accident occurred around 6:30pm near Soyadi Bus Stand at Algi Union in the upazila. The information was confirmed by Officer-in-Charge Md Helal Uddin of Bhanga Highway Police.
Local sources said an egg-laden truck travelling from Dhaka to Khulna suffered a tyre burst and overturned near the bus stand, spilling eggs across the highway. As local residents gathered on the road to collect the scattered eggs, a Narail Express passenger bus travelling from Dhaka to Narail ploughed into the crowd.
Five people were killed on the spot, while at least seven others sustained injuries.
