Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader in the Parliament Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday vowed that the 11-party alliance would not back down from its demand to implement outcome of the referendum, saying the coalition would continue its movement until the government acts.
Addressing a divisional rally at Zilla School Ground in Rangpur, he said the alliance would remain steadfast despite what he described as various attempts to pressure it into abandoning the demand.
"We have made a commitment to the nation. We cannot betray the people. We will continue our struggle and compel the government to implement the referendum verdict. We will not retreat even an inch," he added.
The rally was organised to press for implementation of the referendum, Teesta Master Plan, an end to border killings and alleged push-ins, and measures to address the long-standing problems of northern Bangladesh.
Jamaat chief urged the government to implement Teesta Master Plan, alleging that despite earlier promises, no allocation has been made for the project in the current national budget. The 11-party government, if elected in the future, will prioritise the project.
