Jinnat Ali (40) was stabbed to death during a clash between two groups over a disputed road in Umarmajid union of Rajarhat upazila, Kurigram. Two others were injured in the incident while 13 were detained to keep the situation under control.
The incident occurred at around 2:30PM on Tuesday (July 14) in Umarmajid village.
Police and local sources confirm, upazila administration recently recovered a confiscated road with the help of locals. The road was then opened for public use.
On Tuesday, some men went to the spot and started earth-cutting work. Jinnat Ali, son of Abdur Sattar, opposed the work. This triggered a violent clash which caused his death.
A murder case is being prepared, Rajarhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mamunur Rashid said.
Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to Kurigram General Hospital. However, Jinnat Ali died on the way. On-duty doctors at the hospital declared him dead. The body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The injured Joynal Mian and Nayan Ali were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Following the incident, the upazila administration and police deployed additional forces in the area to prevent retaliatory violence.
