Zia Assassination

Mozaffar arrest may shed fresh light

Published : Saturday, 18 July, 2026 at 12:00 AM
The arrest of retired Major Mozaffar Hossain, a convicted fugitive in connection with the 1981 assassination of former President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, after long 45 years has renewed public attention to one of the country's most debated political killings.

Security analysts and law enforcement sources believe the arrest could provide investigators with an opportunity to revisit unanswered questions surrounding the assassination and the military events that unfolded in the country’s history.

Ziaur Rahman was assassinated on May 30, 1981, at the Chattogram Circuit House during an army uprising. Although several military officers were subsequently tried by a military court and 12 were executed, questions have continued to surround the planning of the assassination, the motives behind the operation, and the broader circumstances of the mutiny.

According to law enforcement sources, former Major Mozaffar had remained a fugitive for nearly 45 years. Authorities said he was recently arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) after a lengthy intelligence operation. Officials said investigators had tracked him to a residence in Banani DOHS in the capital following months of surveillance and verification.

Police sources said identifying the retired officer proved challenging because decades had passed since the incident. Investigators reportedly relied on physical characteristics and other intelligence to confirm his identity before carrying out the arrest.

According to investigators, Mozaffar had initially gone into hiding inside Bangladesh before later moving to India, where he allegedly lived under assumed identities for many years. Authorities are now examining how he managed to evade arrest for decades and whether any individuals or networks assisted him during his years as a fugitive. These claims have not yet been independently verified or tested in court.

Security analysts believe the arrest may provide investigators with an opportunity to examine unresolved aspects of the 1981 assassination. They argue that questioning a surviving convicted participant could help clarify the sequence of events leading to the killing, the objectives of those involved, and decisions made immediately after the assassination.

Some intelligence and security officials have suggested forming a high-level investigation committee involving military and civilian agencies to review available evidence and historical records. Such a committee, if established, could include representatives from relevant security and intelligence institutions to examine previously unresolved issues connected to the case.

Analysts say investigators may seek information regarding the planning of the operation at the Chattogram Circuit House, the chain of command among participating officers, and events that occurred after President Ziaur Rahman was killed. They also believe investigators may attempt to determine whether additional individuals played roles that have never been fully documented.

Authorities are also expected to investigate Mozaffar's years as a fugitive, including the identities of those who may have assisted him in remaining outside the reach of law enforcement. Officials have not publicly disclosed the results of any interrogation, and no new charges related to these matters have been announced.

Former Major Mozaffar is currently reported to be in military custody because of his previous conviction under military law. Officials have not released details regarding any future legal proceedings or whether further investigations will result in additional action.

Despite renewed public interest, several important issues remain unresolved. No public statement has yet been issued by Mozaffar following his arrest, and authorities have not released any new documentary evidence concerning the assassination or the earlier military investigations. As a result, many of the claims circulating about the events of 1981 continue to await formal investigation and judicial scrutiny.

Political observers note that the assassination of Ziaur Rahman remains one of the most significant events in Bangladesh's modern history. They argue that any renewed investigation should be conducted impartially, relying on documentary evidence, witness testimony, and established legal procedures rather than speculation.

The arrest of a long-time fugitive has reopened discussion of a case that has remained controversial for more than four decades. Whether the latest developments will produce new evidence or provide definitive answers to longstanding questions remains uncertain. Investigators are expected to continue examining the available evidence as authorities determine the next steps in the case.

Following Zia's assassination, 18 army officers were tried by a military court on charges of rebellion. Thirteen were sentenced to death, while the others received prison terms of varying lengths. However, Major SM Khaled and Major Mozaffar escaped, and bounties were announced for information leading to their arrest.
