Ensure safety & security for women and children

Dear Sir,

The true measure of a nation's civilisation lies in how well it protects its women and children. Bangladesh has made notable progress in many sectors, but such achievements lose meaning if women and children continue to live in fear.

The recently published half-yearly report of Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) presents an alarming picture. It recorded 404 rape victims, including 238 children and adolescent girls, while 17 victims were murdered after rape. A total of 1,621 women and girls faced various forms of violence, about 56 per cent higher than the same period last year. The report also documented 1,077 abused children, including 305 deaths.

Many cases remain unreported due to stigma and fear. While strict law enforcement is essential, prevention through family values, education, public awareness, prompt justice, comprehensive victim support, and responsible media reporting is equally important. Protecting women and children is a moral, social, and national responsibility.
