Rohingya woman killed, child injured in fresh landslide at Cox’s Bazar camp

An 18-year-old Rohingya woman was killed and a three-year-old child injured after a landslide struck a shelter in a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Monday evening. The latest incident comes amid persistent heavy rainfall that has heightened the risk of landslides across the camps.

A fresh landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has claimed the life of an 18-year-old Rohingya woman and injured a three-year-old child at a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred around 5:30 pm on Monday (July 20) in the hilly area adjacent to Block D/5 of Camp-8 East.

The deceased was identified as Bibi Hafsa, 18, daughter of Shami Ullah, a resident of Block D/5 in Camp-8 East. The injured child, Abdul Majid, 3, is the son of Nur Islam, who also lives in the same block.

According to eyewitnesses and local residents, a section of a hillside suddenly collapsed onto a shelter during continuous rainfall, burying it under mud and debris.

Bibi Hafsa died at the scene, while local residents rescued the injured child and rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, Riaz Uddin Ahmed, Commanding Officer of the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBn), said that recent heavy rainfall has significantly increased the risk of landslides in the hilly and vulnerable areas of the Rohingya camps.

He urged residents living in high-risk shelters to remain alert and relocate to safer areas if necessary.

According to relevant sources, several landslides have occurred in different Rohingya camps in Ukhiya during the ongoing monsoon season. With the latest incident, the death toll from landslides in the camps has risen to 14, while many shelters have also been damaged.
