State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque on Tuesday said, "Sport is the most effective means of building a united Bangladesh and steering young people away from drug abuse."
Speaking as chief guest at the opening ceremony of the national phase of the Notun Kuri Sports 2025-26 at the Syed Nazrul Islam National Swimming Complex in Mirpur, the state minister said participation in sport transcends political divisions and promotes a healthier, more disciplined society. Youth and Sports Secretary Md. Mahbub-ul-Alam presided over the programme.
Aminul said the nationwide talent hunt was launched in Sylhet on 2 March under the guidance of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman before progressing through upazila, district and divisional stages. The national competition began on Tuesday and will conclude on 27 July.
Highlighting the programme's success, he said the inaugural edition features eight disciplines and preparations for the second edition are already underway. Registration opened on 1 July, with future competitions to begin from the union level to ensure year-round sporting activities.
The state minister also announced that outstanding performers would receive opportunities for higher education and professional sports training through BKSP.
