Two members of a family have died from burn injuries sustained in a gas explosion caused by a suspected gas leak at a house in Dhaka’s Notun Bazar area.
The deceased were identified as Md Shahin, 24, and his eight-year-old niece, Hafsa. Hafsa died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery late Thursday night, while Shahin succumbed to his injuries in the institute’s intensive care unit early Friday.
The explosion occurred early Tuesday at a residence in the 100 Feet area of Notun Bazar, leaving three family members injured. Shahin’s wife, Fahima Akter, 21, also suffered severe burns and remains in critical condition.
According to neighbours, the blast was triggered by a gas leak inside the house. The injured were rescued and taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.
Residential physician Dr Shawon Bin Rahman said Shahin had suffered burns to 50% of his body, Hafsa 40%, and Fahima 45%. He said Fahima’s condition remains critical.
