China Urges Renewed Iran-US Dialogue to Ease Middle East Tensions

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for the early resumption of dialogue between the United States and Iran, stressing that negotiations remain the only viable path to reducing tensions in the Middle East and the Gulf region.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers' meeting on Friday, where the two leaders discussed the regional security situation.

According to Chinese state media, Wang said the memorandum of understanding reached between Washington and Tehran more than a month ago, through the efforts of multiple mediators, represented important diplomatic progress.

"Once the door to negotiations is opened, it should not be closed, and if there is hope for peace, it should never be abandoned," he said.

Wang also reaffirmed China's support for safeguarding Iran's sovereignty, security and national dignity. He called for continued mediation by regional stakeholders, including Pakistan, and urged that issues such as the Strait of Hormuz be resolved through dialogue.

Araghchi reiterated Iran's willingness to return to negotiations, while urging the United States to honour its commitments and exercise restraint.
