Meghmallar Basu, another resign from BCU

Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU) Education and Research Secretary Meghmallar Basu and Central Committee Vice-President Main Ahmed have resigned from their posts, citing potential organisational conflict arising from their involvement in multiple political platforms.

The resignations were confirmed through a press release signed by BCU General Secretary Shimul Kumbhakar on Saturday.

“The resignations submitted by Meghmallar Basu and Main Ahmed have been accepted by the central parliament,” the statement said.

Earlier this year, the emergence of a new political platform, Network for People Action (NPA), sparked discussions over Meghmallar Basu’s possible involvement after his name appeared on a list of 99 members associated with the initiative.

Later, Meghmallar said that he had resigned from Bangladesh Chhatra Union and joined NPA, ending speculation over his political affiliation.

In its statement, the students’ organisation said the current political context had created a situation where holding responsibilities in two separate political organisations simultaneously could lead to “organisational disagreement or conflict of interest.”

“Considering this, they voluntarily submitted their resignation letters,” the statement said.
BCU central committee said it accepted the resignations after reviewing the reasons cited by the two leaders and their political positions.

The organisation also said that, due to the same political context and organisational realities, Central Parliament Vice-President Nazifa Jannat had been relieved of her responsibilities.

“The decision has been taken in the interest of protecting the ideology and organisational transparency of the organisation,” the statement added.

It further said that holding policy-making responsibilities in multiple political organisations was inconsistent with the organisational structure and principles of the Chhatra Union.

The organisation acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing leaders during their tenure and wished them success in their future political and personal endeavours.

Reiterating its political position, BCU said it would continue its struggle for the right to education, secularism, democracy, anti-imperialism, and the establishment of a discrimination-free socialist Bangladesh.
