Bangladesh's EV Future Depends on Stronger Amid Sakif Khan is the Managing Director of BYD Bangladesh, leading the company's efforts to expand the country's electric vehicle (EV) market and promote sustainable mobility and clean energy solutions. In an exclusive interview with Mizanur Rahman, Senior Reporter of the Daily Observer, Amid shared BYD's vision for Bangladesh's EV future, investment prospects, and strategies to help reduce carbon emissions. Excerpts of the interview are as follows
DO: Bangladesh has set ambitious goals for clean transportation. In your view, what are the biggest barriers to large-scale EV adoption in the country, and how can they be addressed?
Amid: Goals should always be ambitious, as meaningful progress can only be achieved through bold and forward-looking initiatives. First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the government for taking this significant step toward promoting clean transportation. The reduction in import duties on electric vehicles demonstrates the Government's commitment to accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility and achieving a cleaner environment.
For large-scale adoption of electric vehicles, however, additional measures will be essential. As previously mentioned, the government has already taken the first step by encouraging the adoption of new energy vehicles alongside the development of renewable energy. To ensure the long-term success of this initiative, greater emphasis must now be placed on strengthening the country's electricity infrastructure. This includes improving the reliability of power distribution, maintaining stable grid voltage, and enhancing the overall resilience of the electricity network.
DO: Is BYD planning to help expand Bangladesh's EV charging network through public or private partnerships?"
Amid: It is up to the Government if they want to partner with the private sector. But BYD Bangladesh is ready to invest and increase the charging stations nationwide.
DO: BYD’s Blade Battery has gained global recognition for its safety and durability. What makes this technology different, and how does it benefit consumers in markets like Bangladesh?
Amid: BYD's patented Blade Battery is one of the most significant technological innovations and a key reason behind the exceptional safety and reliability of its new energy vehicles. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries that typically use NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) chemistry, the Blade Battery utilizes Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology, which offers superior thermal stability, enhanced safety, and a longer service life.
The Blade Battery has successfully passed the industry-leading ‘nail penetration test’, one of the most rigorous battery safety tests, demonstrating its ability to maintain stability even under extreme conditions. Additionally, its unique blade-shaped cell design allows the battery pack to serve as a structural component of the vehicle, improving body rigidity, crash safety, and overall driving stability.
DO: Beyond passenger cars, does BYD see opportunities in Bangladesh for electric buses, trucks, or other commercial vehicles? Which segment do you believe has the greatest growth potential?
Amid: BYD has all the options for the automotive industry; they are developing products suitable for Asian conditions. Once that is completed, I hope they will come to introduce their Commercial Range with new technologies in Bangladesh.

DO: Sustainability is at the core of BYD’s business. How does the company address battery recycling, carbon reduction, and the overall environmental impact of electric vehicles throughout their lifecycle?
Amid: Sustainability is at the heart of BYD’s business philosophy, and we believe the environmental responsibility of an electric vehicle extends far beyond simply replacing an internal combustion engine. It encompasses the entire lifecycle of the vehicle, from the sourcing of materials and battery production to energy efficiency, battery reuse, recycling, and end-of-life management.
BYD has invested significantly in battery technology and has developed the Blade Battery, which is designed with safety, durability, and longevity in mind. A longer battery lifespan means greater utilization over the vehicle's lifetime and helps reduce the environmental impact associated with frequent battery replacement. When it comes to end-of-life batteries, BYD supports a circular approach where batteries can be assessed for potential second-life applications before being recycled. Valuable materials can then be recovered through appropriate recycling processes, helping reduce the need for new raw materials and minimize waste. Carbon reduction is also addressed across our broader operations and technology ecosystem. Through our commitment to new energy vehicles, BYD is helping reduce tailpipe emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
DO: If Bangladesh is to become a significant EV market over the next decade, what role does BYD hope to play in shaping that transformation?
Amid: BYD has its new technologies to make cities smarter and make the future greener and cleaner. "Cool the Earth by 1°C" is the official corporate mission and sustainability slogan of BYD. It represents the company's long-term environmental commitment to curbing global warming through the development and adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs), solar power, and energy storage.
DO: BYD has recently celebrated the landmark achievement of over 1000 vehicles on the country’s roads. How would you summarize BYD’s journey and key milestones since March 2024?
Ans: In a nutshell, starting in 2024 with the New Energy vehicle was challenging. Through positive Customer experiences with the cars and after-sales services, BYD Bangladesh could establish trust among the customers.
