Dear Sir,
The majority of Dhaka’s residents rely on WASA water for drinking and everyday household use. However, several recent joint studies have raised serious concerns about its safety, detecting high levels of PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), commonly known as “forever chemicals.” As these chemicals do not easily break down, they can accumulate in the human body, increasing the risks of cancer, kidney and liver damage, weakened immune function, and hormonal imbalances.
Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right. Yet, despite these alarming findings, the lack of visible and effective action from the relevant authorities is deeply disappointing. Authorities must ensure regular water quality testing, identify and eliminate contamination sources, adopt advanced treatment technologies, and make test results publicly available.
I urge the Ministry of Local Government, Dhaka WASA, and all authorities concerned to prioritise public health and take immediate action. Ensuring safe drinking water can no longer be delayed.
