No extremist activities to be allowed : DMP

Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit chief, Additional Commissioner Mohammad Shamsul Haque, on Monday said there are currently no indications that extremist activities are resurging in Bangladesh.

He said authorities are maintaining round-the-clock surveillance of potential extremist activities through online platforms, social media, intelligence inputs and the unit's own database.

Shamsul Haque made the remarks while responding to questions at a press briefing on the arrest of two suspects in the capital's Kadamtali area, where police recovered a large quantity of counterfeit currency along with equipment used to produce fake notes.

Asked specifically whether extremism was re-emerging, he said, "There is no scope to make such a conclusion at this stage. However, we are not seeing any alarming signs anywhere in the country."

Regarding the recovery of a bomb-like object beneath the Motijheel metro rail station, he said police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the information and deployed the bomb disposal unit.

"The incident is now under investigation by the Motijheel Division of the police. It would not be appropriate to comment on who was involved or what their motive was before the investigation is completed," he added.

When asked about the progress of militancy-related cases, Shamsul Haque said detailed arrest statistics would be provided later. However, he confirmed that seven people had been arrested in the high-profile FATA Combat case.

"The investigation has also uncovered the involvement of several other individuals, and regular cases have been filed against them. The principal accused has given a confessional statement before the court," he said.

He also assured that technology-based surveillance, intelligence gathering and necessary operations to prevent potential extremist activities would continue as before.
