The Habiganj district administration has imposed Section 144 across the municipal area after the BNP and the National Citizens Party (NCP) announced rival political programs at the same venue on Wednesday, raising concerns over possible unrest.
District Magistrate Dr. G. M. Sarfaraz issued the order as a preventive measure to maintain public order.
According to the administration, the NCP planned a protest rally and street meeting in Habiganj municipality, while Habiganj Sadar Upazila BNP, Habiganj Municipality BNP, and Habiganj District Chhatra Dal announced counter-rallies and sit-in demonstrations at the same time and location.
Officials said the simultaneous programs were expected to attract large numbers of supporters from both sides, increasing the likelihood of clashes, casualties, damage to property, and disruption of public order.
To avert any untoward incidents, the administration enforced Section 144 across the Habiganj municipal area until further notice.
The restrictions prohibit gatherings of five or more people, public meetings, processions, slogan chanting, the use of loudspeakers or miking, picketing, excessive noise through any device, and any other activities that could disturb law and order.
