Directorate of Posts receives BDT 18.5cr revenue share from Nagad for FY26

Mobile financial service (MFS) provider Nagad has handed over BDT 18.56 crore to the Directorate of Posts as its revenue share for the 2025-26 fiscal year, marking a 34 per cent year-on-year increase.

The revenue share grew by over BDT 5 crore compared to the figure in the previous fiscal year.

Bangladesh Bank-appointed Administrator for Nagad, Md. Motasem Billah, handed over the cheque to Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam, MP, at a ceremony at Daak Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on Wednesday.

Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Bilquis Jahan Rimi, Director General of the Directorate of Posts Kazi Asadul Islam and senior officials from both organisations were present.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam said, “Without Nagad, there will be a monopoly in the market, and we will not allow that to happen. Nagad must maintain a competitive market and become even more profitable.”

Calling on journalists present at the event not to heed any rumours regarding Nagad, the minister said there is no alternative to digital transactions for the development of people in remote areas, students, and general people.

“People know Nagad is a state-backed institution. Therefore, we must move forward with Nagad through essential activities and services,” he added.

Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Bilkis Jahan Rimi said, “Today is a day of joy for us. The government has earned a substantial amount of revenue through Nagad. We will work on exploring further avenues for the Directorate of Posts to collaborate with Nagad.”

Expressing gratitude to Nagad’s management following the cheque handover, Director General of the Directorate of Posts Kazi Asadul Islam said, “We often hear that state-owned entities cannot turn a profit, but we have disproven that narrative through Nagad and demonstrated that government services can indeed be profitable.”

Highlighting the operator’s financial contribution since its inception, the director general noted that Nagad has so far paid BDT 946 crore in taxes to the government alongside BDT 47 crore in revenue shares to the postal department.

“In total, the government has received nearly BDT 1,000 crore since Nagad’s inception, which is a significant achievement. Building on the trust and goodwill of marginalised people, we aim to move further forward in the days ahead,” he added.

Nagad Administrator Md. Motasem Billah said Nagad has made an outstanding contribution to bringing marginalised people across the country under financial inclusion through technology.

“Besides driving innovations, Nagad plays the paramount role in safeguarding consumer interests by enhancing market competition. At the same time, the operator continues to play a vital role in generating revenue for the government every year,” he added.

Since its launch in March 2019, Nagad has earned people’s trust, contributing significantly to the country's digital financial ecosystem by bringing underprivileged populations under financial inclusion. Currently, the company records a daily average transaction volume exceeding BDT 1,500 crore.

As per the partnership agreement, Nagad Limited bears all capital and operational expenditures, including technological infrastructure, requiring no financial investment from the postal department. Following the deduction of specific allowable operational expenses from total revenue, the Directorate of Posts receives 51 per cent of the net proceeds, while Nagad Limited retains the remaining 49 per cent.

Before this latest payment, Nagad Limited had disbursed nearly BDT 28.5 crore in cumulative revenue shares to the Postal Department since its inception. With the addition of the disbursement for the recently concluded 2025-26 fiscal year, Nagad’s total revenue contribution to the Directorate of Posts stands at BDT 47 crore.

Earlier in March 2026, Nagad handed over BDT 13.82 crore for the 18 months spanning January 2024 to June 2025. Previous disbursements included BDT 5.51 crore in 2024 and BDT 4.50 crore in 2022. Over the preceding years, Nagad provided BDT 4.5 crore in revenue share to the postal department.

Beyond this, the MFS operator paid BDT 313 crore to the exchequer in VAT and other taxes during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year.

In FY 2025-26, Nagad processed transactions totalling BDT 4,27,000 crore - a 25.5 per cent year-on-year growth from BDT 3,40,000 crore in the preceding year. Alongside the steady surge in transaction volume and count, the operator’s user base expanded substantially, with active customers surpassing 3 crore as of June, including over 2.25 crore app users.
