Five days of heavy rainfall likely across Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast five consecutive days of heavy rainfall across parts of the country, with rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds expected in all eight divisions.

In its 120-hour weather outlook issued at 9:00am on Wednesday, the Met Office said the wet spell is likely to continue through Sunday, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected at places across the country.

According to the forecast, by 9:00am on Thursday, many places in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and a few places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions, may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds. Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall is also likely at places across the country. Day and night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.

For the following 24 hours, ending Friday morning, many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and a few places in Rajshahi, Dhaka and Khulna divisions, are likely to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds. Moderate to heavy rainfall may also occur at places nationwide, while temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.

The forecast for the next 24 hours, ending Saturday morning, indicates rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds at many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, and at a few places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions. Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely at places across the country, while day and night temperatures may rise slightly.

For the 24-hour period ending Sunday morning, many places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, and a few places in Khulna, Dhaka, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, are expected to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also forecast in parts of the country. Temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged.

A similar weather pattern is expected for the following 24 hours, with rain or thundershowers likely at many places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at a few places in Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions. Moderate to heavy rainfall may continue at places across the country, while temperatures are expected to remain almost unchanged.

The BMD said the prevailing trend of rainfall is likely to continue over the next five days.

According to the Met Office, the deep depression that had been over north Odisha and the adjoining Gangetic West Bengal coastal area has moved westwards and now lies over north Odisha, southern Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. It is expected to weaken gradually as it continues moving west.

The extended axis of the monsoon trough stretches from Rajasthan through Madhya Pradesh, the centre of the deep depression and the southern part of Bangladesh to Assam. The monsoon remains fairly active over Bangladesh and is moderate to strong over the North Bay of Bengal.
