Plea filed to show Kalimullah arrested in attempted murder case

A petition has been filed against former Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah to show him arrested in an attempted murder case linked to the last year's anti-discrimination movement.
The application was filed on Tuesday (July 28) by the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Md Abu Sayeed of Uttara West Police Station. Following the petition, the court of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain fixed Thursday for a hearing.
Helal Uddin, a sub-inspector of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Department, confirmed the development on Wednesday.

According to Kalimullah's lawyer, the High Court granted him bail on June 14 in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case on condition that he furnish a Tk 100,000 bond and surrender his passport. After the bail bond was submitted on Monday, police filed the application seeking to show him arrested in the attempted murder case, preventing his release from jail.
The investigating officer stated in the petition that there was sufficient evidence of Kalimullah's alleged involvement in the case. As he is currently in custody, the petition said, showing him arrested in the case is necessary to ensure a fair and impartial investigation and to keep him in jail until the investigation is completed.
Kalimullah was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from his Mohammadpur residence on August 7, 2025, in an ACC case over the alleged embezzlement of funds allocated for development work at Begum Rokeya University. He was sent to jail the same day after a court rejected his bail plea and has remained in custody since then.
The attempted murder case was filed by Mustain Billah Sabbir, who alleged that he was shot and injured during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 19, 2024, in the Rabindra Sarani area under Uttara West Police Station.
According to the case statement, the accused, along with others, allegedly opened fire on students and members of the public, leaving Sabbir with a bullet injury to his left arm. The case was later filed with Uttara West Police Station, with Sabbir as the complainant.
