Two young men were electrocuted and died while catching fish in a wetland using an electric water pump in Porsha upazila of Naogaon on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The deceased were identified as Mahabur Hossain, son of Shafiuddin, and Abdul Aziz, son of late Abdul Gafur. Both were residents of Katkoil (Bilpara) village in the upazila.
According to Tofayel Ahmed, an elder neighbour of Abdul Aziz, the two had gone to a nearby wetland in the morning to catch fish after draining water with an electric pump. They returned home with the fish around 10:00 am and went back to the wetland at about 1:00 pm to continue fishing.
He said the electric pump had been left running at the site. At one stage, a leakage in the electrical wiring reportedly energized the water. As Mahabur stepped into the water, he was electrocuted. Abdul Aziz rushed to rescue him but was also electrocuted. Both died on the spot.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Porsha Police Station, Ziaur Rahman, said police had been sent to the scene after receiving the information.
"Legal action will be taken following an investigation," the OC added.
