US-Bangla Airlines, Bangladesh's largest private carrier, on Wednesday announced a landmark US$1.5 billion fleet expansion, unveiling plans to acquire 21 new Boeing aircraft in one of the largest private investments in the country's aviation history.
The announcement was made during the US-Bangla Airlines’ “Beyond with Boeing" event in Dhaka, attended by Civil Aviation and Tourism State Minister Rashiduzzaman Millat, PM’s Foreign Affairs and Civil Aviation Adviser Humaiun Kabir, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen, Boeing executive Paul Righi, senior government officials, diplomats, aviation stakeholders, and members of the media.
Under the expansion programme, the airline will induct 15 Boeing 737-8 aircraft and six Boeing 737-800 aircraft by the end of 2027. The new fleet will feature advanced fuel-efficient technology, modern cabin interiors, larger overhead bins, in-seat power, wireless inflight entertainment, high-speed internet connectivity, and enhanced operational capabilities aimed at improving passenger experience while reducing operating costs.
Speaking at the event, Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Managing Director of US-Bangla Group and US-Bangla Airlines, said the investment represents more than an expansion of the airline's fleet.
"This investment reflects our long-term vision to transform US-Bangla from an airline into a fully integrated global aviation group," he said. "We are investing not only in aircraft but also in people, technology, training, maintenance, cargo, catering, and infrastructure to support the sustainable growth of Bangladesh's aviation sector."
Bangladesh's international air travel market is currently estimated at around US$5.8 billion annually, but foreign airlines continue to carry the majority of international passengers. According to the airline, the new aircraft will enable Bangladeshi carriers to capture a larger share of the international market, helping retain foreign exchange while strengthening the country's aviation competitiveness.
Following the arrival of the new aircraft, US-Bangla Airlines plans to increase frequencies on its existing international routes across South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and the Middle East. It also intends to launch flights to several new destinations, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Colombo, Kathmandu, Kunming, Shenzhen, Beijing, Johor Bahru, Penang, Kuwait, Bahrain, Madinah, Dammam, and Salalah, along with destinations in South Korea and Japan, subject to regulatory approvals.
As part of its long-term network strategy, the airline also plans to develop Chattogram and Sylhet as regional international hubs, allowing passengers from eastern Bangladesh to access direct international flights without relying solely on Dhaka.
Beyond passenger services, US-Bangla outlined an ambitious aviation development plan that includes establishing a world-class aviation training academy, developing aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, launching a dedicated air cargo airline, and building a modern flight catering facility capable of serving both domestic and international carriers.
The airline said it has already sponsored dozens of Bangladeshi cadet pilots for overseas training and will further expand investment in pilot and aircraft engineering education to meet the country's growing demand for skilled aviation professionals.
Highlighting the broader economic importance of aviation, Mamun called for supportive government policies, competitive airport charges, modern bilateral air service agreements, improved infrastructure, and investment-friendly regulations to unlock Bangladesh's aviation potential.
"Aviation is not simply a mode of transportation," he said. "It is a strategic economic sector that drives tourism, trade, investment, employment, technology, and international connectivity. With the right policies and strong collaboration between the government and industry, Bangladesh has the opportunity to emerge as one of South Asia's leading aviation markets over the next two decades."
