Democracy key to country's progress and people's welfare, says minister Jahid Hossain

Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs minister Professor Dr. A.Z.M. Jahid Hossain on Friday said democracy is vital for the country's progress and the well-being of its people, urging all to uphold democratic values and respect the people's mandate to strengthen democratic institutions.
Speaking at the inauguration of a three-day tree plantation fair organised by the Nawabganj Upazila Administration in Dinajpur, Prof. Dr. Jahid Hossain said the democratic gains achieved through the 17-year political struggle and the July 2024 mass uprising must be safeguarded through democratic behaviour, dialogue and political culture.
He called on all political parties and citizens to continue working towards restoring and institutionalising democracy by respecting the people's verdict. He said if the people do not support any individual or political party, the responsibility does not lie with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) or its Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
The adviser also urged everyone to remain vigilant against any attempt to rehabilitate authoritarian forces and advised the public not to be influenced by conspiracies or provocative statements, saying that the ultimate decision should always rest with the people.
Claiming that the people have placed their trust in Tarique Rahman's leadership, he said they elected the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to more than two-thirds of the parliamentary seats because they believe it is the most capable party to govern the country.
Earlier, Prof. Dr. Jahid Hossain inaugurated the tree plantation programme by cutting the ceremonial ribbon and releasing balloons. The event was chaired by Nawabganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Bidhan Kanti Halder.
During the visit, the adviser also inaugurated the renovation and beautification work of the Upazila Parishad auditorium, distributed sewing machines among beneficiaries from ethnic minority communities under a development assistance programme of the Prime Minister's Office, awarded scholarships to students of educational institutions, and handed over financial assistance cheques to underprivileged and meritorious students under the Ministry of Social Welfare.
The programme was attended by officials from various government departments, elected public representatives, police officials, teachers and students from different educational institutions, political leaders, and distinguished local residents.
