India denies Hasina opportunity for political activities on its soil

New Delhi has not given former PM of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina any opportunity to conduct political activism from inside India.
They are currently examining Bangladesh’s request to extradite her.
According to the report of The Times of India, these details were revealed in a parliamentary committee report presented in Lok Sabha. The report was published on Thursday, July 30.
The report stated that central government of India informed the Standing Committee on External Affairs that Bangladesh’s extradition request is currently being reviewed by relevant authorities.
Verdict will come after analyzing the applicable laws and established procedures.
The observation was included in a action-taken report on recommendations made by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.
The report, titled ‘Future of India-Bangladesh Relations,’ was tabled in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
The committee noted that the extradition request was made after a Bangladeshi court sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death in absentia. The panel requested the central government to keep it updated on the review's progress.
Moreover, the committee reported that Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India is viewd as the country’s ‘civilizational ethos and humanitarian tradition of offering shelter to an individual facking severe distress to life-threat.’
The panel clarified that the Indian government has not granted her ‘any political platform.’ India maintains a strict policy of not allowing its territory to be used for political activities against any other nation.
The committee recommended that the Indian government continue its "principled and humanitarian approach." It urged the government to handle such situations with due sensitivity while fulfilling India's international obligations.
Earlier, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina fled to India, following the fall of AL regime amid a mass student-led protest in July 2024.
Bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh strained after an interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus took charge following her ouster.
Later, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) formed the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman after the parliamentary election held in February 2026.
