DB Chief clarifies police safety alert as routine 'reminder' amid bomb scares

Alerts issued to police following recent bomb scares in the capital is not based on specific intelligence, rather a routine ‘reminder,’ stated Additional Commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Shafiqul Islam.
The clarification came while answering for a press conference held in DMP Media Center on Sunday.
Shafiqul Islam said, "We ensure the safety of public life and property. Along with the public, we also have to look after our own safety. Therefore, we always issue such alerts."
"Recently, several bomb-related incidents surfaced and false rumors were spread. We are active regarding this matter, and such alerts are given at various times so that our security is maintained," he added.
Responding to a question, he said, “No specific intelligence regarding attacks on law enforcement was received. But we are always alert.”
Regarding the umbrella IED recovered from Motijheel, the DB chief said the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit is investigating the incident while DB is conducting a shadow investigation.
"Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved. However, as our investigation is ongoing, nothing more can be disclosed now," he said.
When asked whether any organization was involved, he stated such acts are promoted by specific ideology or mandate, meaning it might not be committed by an individual alone.
Earlier on Saturday, August 1, an urgent message was sent from the Police Headquarters Operations Control Room to all field-level units instructing them to bolster security.
The message warned that extremists or miscreants might target police vehicles, including jeeps, pickups, and buses.
It instructed that temporarily stopped duty vehicles must be parked in safe locations under police surveillance, while patrolling and monitoring around police stations and lines should be increased.
Police Headquarters AIG (Media) AHM Shahadat Hossain said such instructions are routinely given to keep police personnel active and alert, adding that there is no cause for panic.
Over the past week, several bomb scares occurred in the capital.
On July 24, police recovered and neutralized a powerful IED inside an umbrella under the Motijheel metro rail station, which was allegedly placed targeting the Ulto Rath Yatra procession.
The following day, a sack with a protruding umbrella near Bangladesh Bank caused panic, though no explosives were found.
Most recently on Saturday, two suspicious bags recovered at Mirpur-10 and Farmgate metro stations were checked by the DMP bomb disposal unit and found free of explosives.
Police sources confirmed that the fresh instructions to field-level officers were issued in light of these recent incidents.
