Shahed jailed for one year in cheque bounce case

Defence lawyer Mohammad Dabir Uddin said the verdict had been delivered in Shahed's absence on May 3. On Sunday, he was shown arrested under the conviction warrant, his bail petition was rejected, and he was sent to jail.

The case was filed on July 26, 2020, by Hafiz Uddin Bahar, proprietor of Bahar Traders International, alleging that Shahed issued a cheque worth Tk 2,318,358 for construction materials. The cheque, issued on December 10, 2019, was dishonoured due to insufficient funds. After Shahed failed to pay despite receiving a legal notice, the complainant filed the case.

According to the defence, Shahed is currently facing 35 criminal cases.

Shahed, who gained notoriety over the 2020 Regent Hospital fake COVID-19 testing scandal, has remained in jail since his arrest on July 20 in another cheque dishonour case involving Tk 21.6 million. He was previously sentenced to life imprisonment in an arms case in 2020 and was released on bail in multiple cases in September 2024 after serving nearly four years in prison.
