Three of the same family sustained burn injuries due to a bomb-like object hidden inside a sandbag exploded in Uttar Dudhalmou village of Bharpasha union under Bakerganj upazila of Barishal.

The incident occurred around 6:00AM on Monday. Police have sought assistance from a Dhaka bomb disposal and explosives expert unit to determine the exact nature of the explosion.

Entire area has been cordoned off to avoid any unfavorable incident.

Victims of the incident were identified as Hanufa Begum, wife of Shah Alam Howlader, her daughter Iti, and her grandson Fahim.

Injured were initially taken to the Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex. Later, as their conditions deteriorated, they were transferred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. They were admitted to the hospital around 9:30AM.

Police and local sources confirmed, Hanufa Begum was taking her grandson Fahim to school in the morning. Iti was accompanying them. On the way, a bomb-like object inside a sandbag kept as construction material near the house of local Jamal and Kamal exploded with a loud bang.

All three suffered burn injuries in the blast. Loud noise triggered panic across the area.

Shah Alam's son, Jamal Hossain, said, "Immediately after the explosion, my mother, sister, and nephew caught fire. To save their lives, they jumped into the nearby Tulatala River. By then, their clothes were already burnt. Later, they were rescued and rushed to the hospital. However, we know nothing about how the bomb-like object got there."

Sub-Inspector (SI) Habibur Rahman of Bakerganj Police Station, who was present at the scene, said Fahim is a student at a local primary school. The explosion took place around 6:45AM while he was being taken to school.

Primary suspect indicates that the bomb-like object kept inside the construction sandbag exploded. However, the exact type of explosive has not been confirmed yet.

Upon receiving the news, police cordoned off the scene and started collecting evidence. The area has been kept under security while officers investigate the source and cause of the blast.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakerganj Police Station Adil Hossain said the incident is being investigated with high priority. He added that it is impossible to confirm the type of explosive used or who was involved until the probe is completed.

Barishal Superintendent of Police (SP) A. Z. M. Mostafizur Rahman said, "I have initially inspected the scene. The Dhaka bomb disposal and explosives expert team has been informed to confirm whether the exploded object was a cocktail or another type of explosive. They are expected to reach the spot by the afternoon. Meanwhile, the scene remains under police security."
